Kundalini yoga can change your life! A personal sharing from Jaya

From a very young age, I have felt a Loving Presence in my life. My first memory of this was when I was 4yo. I had an experience of Jesus sitting at the end of my bed. This Loving Presence has remained with me throughout my whole life.

I felt troubled when I was young. I felt like an outsider and I didn’t have many friends. I used alcohol and cannabis to self-medicate uncomfortable thoughts and emotions. When I was 22yo, I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and I was very depressed with my 2yo daughter. Life was not good.

I was unhappy and very keen to make some changes. I started reading books from Louise Hay and Wayne Dyer. I was having an experience of the positive affirmations that Louise Hay suggested I say in the mirror and write in my journal everyday.

In 1993, I came across yoga and the classical spiritual text, A Course in Miracles. I knew within my heart that these practices would help me. I started a daily spiritual practice and immediately my life was changing. My relationship with myself and others were starting to heal. I experienced a healing from chronic fatigue and depression. Daily yoga and spiritual practice became connection points to the miracle and my Divine Self.

I let go of yoga for a long time. I should have stayed with it as I’m sure it would of prevented my relapses. I would occasionally relapse on alcohol and cannabis. During these phases in my life,  I would not experience the miracle. Depression came, and went again. By 2007, alcohol and cannabis let go of me. I noticed that the usual crowd of drinking and drugging friends left my life. I met new ‘clean’ friends. I starting going to parties that had no alcohol or cannabis!

In 2011, I lost thousands of dollars in a bad investment. I nearly lost my house. This was a turning point in my spirituality. I became A Course in Miracles student full-time and went to live in a spiritual community.

I thought it would be all love and light. Although, when you really go for God, sometimes all your stuff can come up in your conscious awareness to be healed. This was a very lumpy and difficult time. Lots of support, love and healing were happening.

I fell in love with a man from the other side of the country, Perth! 5000 kms away! I left the community to live with this man that I truly loved in my heart. Well… I was still in some sort of spiritual emergence, although being away from all that I knew and the support of the community, my experience soon became a spiritual crisis or dark night of the soul. Every single feeling that you can imagine was coming up. Intense emotion, mystical experiences, and deep depression. Bipolar symptoms can be normal on the spiritual path.

In 2012, I 'accidentally' discovered Kundalini yoga (KY) when I was traveling in India. I had a very deep experience with KY from the very first class. I so loved how KY made me feel. I loved breath of fire and I loved the music. I had been a seasoned 'chanter' for some time, so I felt right at home with the mantra. It all touched me very deeply.

The effect it has had on my life is profound. Kundalini yoga helps me to get out of my busy and worried head and into my body. This style of yoga helps me to feel present and grounded. I can take a step back from the mind with all of its ups and downs. I have become a 'mind watcher' I feel identified with my spiritual strength. My mood is balanced most of the time and I don't feel any need to self-medicate through substances. I'm clear in my mind and I'm happy most of the time. And physically, I feel younger and healthier. I have a lot more energy and I have lost a lot of weight.

The key for me is daily spiritual practice - sadhana. A daily date with my infinite self - Yay!!

Kundalini yoga to me is more than a physical practice. The body helps me to slow down the thoughts, feel present and gets me into my heart. KY offers me a sense of self-love and acceptance. It helps me to be clear and present with whatever is happening in my life. It offers me direction and purpose so I can see the opportunities in the middle of problems.

KY Universe part 2: dress

Continuing our series of posts on the Kundalini Yoga universe – sharing with you yogic lifestyle teachings special to the practice of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan – this month we look at the practice of wearing white and other practical helpers to strengthen the effects of your practice.

We live in a material world and how we dress and the choices we make about our physical environment both expres

s who we feel ourselves to be and in turn impact how we feel. In Kundalini Yoga there are some strong and very practical ways to help you get in touch and stay in touch with your true and natural self.

1. Wearing white

Of course it's not necessary to wear white to practice Kundalini Yoga, but it is in fact recommended. Before light hits the earth's atmosphere and is refracted into the 7 rays of colour, it is white. So it this way white contains all the colours. Kundalini Yoga is all about experiencing the original you – the purity of your essence. And so wearing white is helpful to connect with this purity and originality of your Self. It helps connect you with your limitlessness. Yogi Bhajan taught that wearing white expands your aura by up to 7 feet. Just by putting it on! Try it. Shower and put on white clothes and experience the effect.

2. Natural fibres

Connected to this practice is the suggestion to wear natural fibres. You'll notice that synthetic fabrics carry their own charge, like a static. All living beings and entities have their own electro-magnetic field, as does the earth. We are poled and we charge and discharge. To take out the random effect of magnetising and charging that comes from man-made fibres, wear only natural fibres and explore the difference. Similar to the practice of wearing white, wearing only natural fibres puts you subtly in touch with your original state. It brings you to neutral, which means you are more able to feel you self, as you naturally are. It runs along the same lines as eating as wholesome, unprocessed food as you can. So the recommendation is, especially when doing yoga and meditation, to wear cotton, wool, silk, hemp or other natural fibre.

3. Sheepskin

You will have seen your teacher sitting on a sheep skin to teach? Another element of yogic lifestyle. Sheepskins are said to neutralise the electromagnetic charge of the earth. It's a kind of insulation. Insulate yourself so as to feel your self neutrally and naturally. Plus, a sheepskin is very cozy and provides nice padding for some of the exercises which would otherwise be uncomfortable, like rolling up and down on the spine. Your sheepskin also accumulates the energy of your practice, so that it even sitting on it changes your state for the better. It can even become a home away from home. You may quickly get to the point where you say, wherever I lay my sheepskin, that's my home!

4. Head covering

And finally the head covering. There are several reasons for wearing something to cover your head while practising. This could be a scarf wrapped around your head, a cotton or wool beanie or hat or a turban. There are lots of way to cover your head. The main thing is that the crown of the head is covered. The practice of Kundalini Yoga aims to bring the energy of your soul self into flow, through your entire being. That energy then, your energy, is contained and circulated, for healing, for raising awareness and for clearing energetic blockages. BY covering the crown the energy is encouraged to cycle back down through your body, creating a continuous, self-nourishing flow. It's all about containment and stability. Not about popping out the crown chakra into the higher realms. Hence the head cover. If you tie it firmer you will also experience a gentle compression in the bone plates of your skull. For some people this firmness gives a sense of containment and coziness that they perhaps didn't even know they were needing. It can also very directly and tangibly help you to keep your head together – to feel focussed and clear.

While none of these things are essential to Kundalini Yoga practice, they all have their reasons and wisdom. As you go along with your practice you may naturally feel attracted to trying them out. We say in Kundalini Yoga that first is the experience. So with this – have an experience of it and decide for yourself.
