Why white and why a head covering?

In Kundalini Yoga, the code of dress for teachers is white. We also cover our heads to teach. Why, you may well ask yourself!

Below Beant Kaur talks about her own first encounter of Kundalini Yoga practitioners en masse and shares the reasoning behind white, as well as talking about the wearing of a head covering.

What's important to remember firstly is this: Kundalini Yoga is for everyone. For people young and old, flexible and stiff, wearing white, black, pink or brown. Whether you end up wearing white when you practice, or a head cover or not, is your own choice. Some just naturally want to try it with time, and most end up continuing, but it is not a prerequisite for practice.

A note for newcomers on the wearing of white in Kundalini Yoga -  by Beant Kaur:

A few times now I´ve had the experience of someone coming up to me at a Full Moon Meditation, saying "I didn´t know I had to wear white! Can I still do the meditation..?" And these are just the ones who voiced their uncertainty, when faced with a room full of people, most of whom are dressed in white clothing! I remember my own first encounter with Kundalini Yoga, where close to a thousand people were there, all in white. Uh-oh, I thought to myself. Luckily something deep inside me said, "Stay open this time. Don´t judge. And then you won´t miss the gift that is coming your way." Happily for me, I listened.

If you don´t know yet, in Kundalini Yoga it is a recommendation to wear white clothing (of natural fibre) to teach and practice. The reasons for this are that there is a certain clarity or cleanness to wearing white. People often feel lightened or cleansed just by putting it on. Energetically, it is said that wearing white also extends the wearer's aura by at least a foot, which gives you a sense of strength and expansion. Wearing white also means you have to be a lot more aware so as to keep clean! And more awareness is generally a goal and fruit of the practice.

Yogi Bhajan said on the subject: "Some people think we are laying a trip. We are not laying a trip on anyone. Colors create an uncontrollable action in your subconscious mind of inspiration, productivity and expansion. Colors have an effect on consciousness. We wanted to develop a very fast, progressive, spiritual and technical method of all the colors, so we have adopted the one color of the seven colors, which is white."

Of course, the choice is yours. Wear white, see how it feels. Or don´t, and see how it feels. And decide for yourself. Above all, whatever you decide to wear to the meditation, you will get the benefit anyway and you will be welcomed.

On wearing a head covering: You will also see Kundalini Yoga teachers wearing a cloth, scarf or even turban as head covering. This too has its reasons. We cover the crown chakra, to protect and contain our energy. As a teacher you serve as a channel for the Golden Chain, or the lineage of the teachings. It also brings awareness and energy to the crown, and in a way, a head covering is a kind of crowning. It says, I am representing the Raj (or royal) yoga of this lineage and I make myself straight and upright in the service of and in the name of that. I am not myself (though I am perhaps most truly myself) when I teach, rather I point to the infinite beyond me. All that and more is contained in the symbol and energetic aid of a head covering. If you are not sure about it, ask your teacher about their relationship to it.
